Mpho ‘Popps’ Modikoane
Comedian, actor, businessman, cool dad extraordinaire.
Mpho ‘Popps’ Modikoane is so much more than meets the eye.
His journey began like anyone with a “big dream”, in the casting line on the national ‘comedy search TV show “So You Think You Are Funny”. This platform gave him the audience he needed to put himself out there as a serious (if that’s possible) comic.
With great local and global appeal, Popps packed venues and line-ups from his debut one-man show “Exhibit A”, his annual “Mpho Popps Birthday Comedy Special”, “Blacks Only”, club tours and festivals. It’s where he solidified his mark on the industry by leaving sore abs throughout the country.
This then earned him a nomination for the first-ever, annual ‘Comics Choices Awards’ in the ‘Best Newcomer” category. The following year, he went on to win the award for “Breakthrough Act”.
He has a talent for languages and this silver=tongues smoothie has the charm to captivate diverse audiences across his homeland, South Africa.
But his appeal doesn’t end at his country’s borders. He has proven that with performances from L.A (The Laugh Factory), Canada (Just for laughs Comedy Festival), Nigeria (Lord of the Ribs comedy festival), Zimbabwe (Shoko Festival), Kenya (A Night of a Thousand Laughs), Lesotho, Botswana, Swaziland and in Ghana.
He has debuted as an actor in the hit drama series “Ayeye” and starred in, and executive-produced a local film “Tina Sobabili”. This was selected to represent South Africa at the Oscars and The Golden Globes.
He has also hosted the South African Music Awards which ratified his mass-appeal in local pop culture.
Popps has the ability to take real-life situations and make them relatable and personal through his humour. He combines an intellectual wit with plug-in pop.
His belief is that his talents are a manifestation of his true self – and not something which gets turned on when he walks onto a stage. It’s his ‘purpose’ to spread laughs and bring joy to audiences around the world.
